Product Description

History

The 1 oz Aztec Calendar Silver Round replicates an extraordinary piece of Central American culture known as the Aztec calendar stone. Carved around the year 1500, the stone holds profound significance as it represents the Aztecs’ understanding of the cosmos and the organization of the universe.

Also known as the Aztec sun stone, it weighs over 24 tons, measures 12 feet across, and is more than 3 feet thick. The stone was buried in ancient Mexico City after the Spanish conquest of Mexico and the Aztec Empire.  It was later rediscovered during repairs to the Mexico City Cathedral in 1790.

The 1 oz Aztec Calendar Silver Round-Design

The obverse of the 1 oz Aztec Calendar Silver Round showcases a circular arrangement reminiscent of the sun. The face of Tonatiuh, the Aztec solar deity  is at its center. Tonatiuh holds a human heart in each hand, and is surrounded by a ring of 20 symbols representing the days of the month on the Aztec calendar.

On the reverse side, you’ll find a left-profile bust of Cuauhtemoc, the last emperor of the Aztec Empire. His reign was brief, during a tumultuous time when Spanish conquistadors’ invasions destabilized the capital city of Tenochtitlan. Elected leader by noblemen after the deaths of Moctezuma II and his brother, Cuauhtemoc wears the headdress and earring typical of Aztec nobility in the design.
