James B. Longacre, the artist behind the Liberty Double Eagle’s design, created a classical rendition of Lady Liberty for the obverse. Inspired by the royal effigies found on ancient Greco-Roman currency, the portrait depicts Lady Liberty in profile, adorned with a crown inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars encircle her, paying homage to each original US colony. This depiction is why the coin is sometimes called the “Liberty Head Double Eagle” or the “Coronet Double Eagle.”

The reverse side of the $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin AU proudly displays the Heraldic Eagle emblem. This iconic design features the national bird holding a shield, with its talons gripping an olive branch and a bundle of arrows. 

Throughout its mintage, the design underwent several revisions, resulting in three versions: the original Type I version, the Type II version with the addition of the “In God We Trust” motto, and the Type III version with the unabbreviated denomination.
