James B. Longacre, the artist behind the designs on both the obverse and reverse of the Liberty Double Eagle, engraved a classical rendition of Lady Liberty on the coin’s obverse. His portrayal, inspired by the royal effigies seen on Greco-Roman currency, depicts Liberty in profile with thick curls beneath an inscribed crown. Encircled by a ring of thirteen stars as a nod to the original thirteen colonies, Longacre’s captivating representation has led to the coin being commonly called the “Liberty Head” or “Coronet” Double Eagle.

The reverse of the $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin VF features the Great Seal of the United States. This emblematic design showcases a bald eagle with a shield, an olive branch, and arrows.
