Product Description

The inaugural release of the $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin VF by the US Mint took place in 1850, marking the inception of this specific denomination. This coin’s production was instigated by the California Gold Rush that occurred two years prior.

Key Features:

  • It contains an actual gold content of .9675 Troy oz
  • Each coins purity is .900 fine gold.
  • $20 (USD) face value
  • Showcases the artwork of James B. Longacre
  • Available in VF (Very Fine) condition
  • Individual coins are shipped in plastic flips, while multiples of 20 are shipped in tubes

James B. Longacre, the artist behind the designs on both the obverse and reverse of the Liberty Double Eagle, engraved a classical rendition of Lady Liberty on the coin’s obverse. His portrayal, inspired by the royal effigies seen on Greco-Roman currency, depicts Liberty in profile with thick curls beneath an inscribed crown. Encircled by a ring of thirteen stars as a nod to the original thirteen colonies, Longacre’s captivating representation has led to the coin being commonly called the “Liberty Head” or “Coronet” Double Eagle.

The reverse of the $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin VF features the Great Seal of the United States. This emblematic design showcases a bald eagle with a shield, an olive branch, and arrows. While Longacre’s artwork remained consistent throughout the coin’s mintage, various changes were made to the inscriptions. These modifications include the addition of the “In God We Trust” motto in 1866 and the abbreviation change of the coin’s denomination in 1877.

“Professional, helpful and no stress approach made my purchase very simple. Fast shipping, low prices and great follow up. The coins were better than expected. I would recommend MBE to anyone looking to purchase precious metals. You will not find a more honest and sincerely company out there.”
“I recently purchased silver bars from MBE and the exchange went wonderfully. The staff was polite and helpful, the product was exactly what I expected, and I had it in my hands in just a few days after ordering. I would definitely buy from MBE again.”
“I was very pleased with my dealings with Midwest Bullion Exchange. I did not feel rushed on the phone with the representative and felt free to ask any questions. My father who has dealt with a lot of other companies that deal in precious metals was also impressed with this business.”
