Drawing inspiration from images of royalty found on ancient Greco-Roman currency, Longacre portrayed Lady Liberty in profile, encircled by 13 stars as a tribute to the original colonies. Adorned with an inscribed diadem in her elaborate curls, the portrait emphasizes Liberty’s role as the primary guiding force of the United States.
On the reverse side, Longacre presents the Great Seal of the United States. This revered emblem features a bald eagle carrying a star-spangled shield with outstretched wings. Gripping a set of arrows and an olive branch in its talons, the eagle symbolizes the delicate balance between war and peace. It’s important to note that three versions of this design exist: the original, a second version that includes the phrase “In God We Trust,” and a third version with the word “Dollar” fully spelled out.
